HELEN SELF

Funeral services for Mrs. Helen Self of West Monroe will be held on 
Saturday, April 15, 2017 at 11:00 AM at Peniel Baptist Church. Officiating 
will be Rev. Eddy Shoemaker and Gary Guice. Interment will be in 
Kilpatrick's Serenity Gardens Cemetery under direction of Kilpatrick Funeral 
Home of West Monroe.

Mrs. Self was born Helen Marie Gandy on April 6, 1930 in Fisher, Louisiana. 
She passed from this life on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 in West Monroe, 
Louisiana. Helen graduated from Mount Carmel High School in 1947 and married 
Ottis on July 4 of that year. They were married for 45 years. Helen was a 
devout Christian, a loving wife, Mother, and Grandmother. She loved her 
family, friends, her church, and the Lord. Helen was a wonderful cook with a 
ministry of cooking for ill friends and church members. She was employed in 
the retail business and retired from Walmart in 1993. After retirement, 
Helen became an avid birdwatcher with a backyard full of birds, bird 
feeders, and bird houses.

Helen is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Carter and husband, Gerald of 
West Monroe; Barbara DeLand and husband, Wally of Benton, Kentucky, 
grandchildren Doug Carter and wife, Jenni, Paul Carter and wife, Christal, 
Phillip DeLand, Haley Dotson and husband, Michael, and Lisa DeLand, great 
grandchildren Caleb Carter, Morgan Carter, Lucas Carter, Kelsey Wheeless, 
and Cody Wheeless, sisters-in-law, Sylvia Self and Mary Sue Gandy, numerous 
nieces and nephews, and countless treasured friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Self, parents, George and 
Genete Gandy, brothers, Hoyt Gandy, Harvie Gandy, Carl Gandy, and sister, 
Geneva Neel.

Pallbearers include Doug Carter, Caleb Carter, Paul Carter, Phillip DeLand, 
Cody Wheeless, Michael Dotson, Mike Self, Bryan Owens, and Dr. Jeff Baille.

The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Morgan and Dr. Scott Barron for 
their loving care.

Visitation will be held Saturday, April 15, 2017 from 9:00 AM until service 
time at the church.
