BESSIE GUILLORY SHANNON


Funeral services celebrating the life of Mrs. Bessie Guillory Shannon, 94, of 
West Monroe will be held at 10:30 AM Tuesday, August 18, 2015 in the chapel of 
Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA with Rev. Jon Tellifero officiating. 
Interment will be in Hasley Cemetery.

Mrs. Shannon passed away August 15, 2015 at St. Francis Medical Center.

Bessie Guillory Shannon, our mom, grew up in the village of Chataignier, LA on 
a rice farm. She lived during the Great Depression and was the youngest of six 
children. She received her BA in education at the LA State Normal College, now 
Northwestern University in Natchitoches, LA. Bessie met her husband, George, 
during World War II at the LSU campus. After the war, dad finished medical 
school and mom was a teacher. Together they raised eight children and were 
married 58 years. A lot of love filled their home, and Christian values were 
instilled. There was never a dull moment and mom managed everything in her calm 
and patient way. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, 
teacher, nurse, and friend. Mom radiated kindness, love, strength, and faith in 
God to her children and all who came in contact with her. She was truly an 
inspiration to us all. Her sweet smiles and winks will be forever cherished. 
Thank you, God for blessing us with such a sweet mother. Mrs. Shannon was a 
member of First United Methodist Church in West Monroe where she sang in the 
choir; she also enjoyed china painting.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. George Shannon; parents, Dorselin 
and Annie Guillory; siblings, Anna Belle Johnson, Samuel Guillory, Elta Reed, 
Olla Davis, and Ural Guillory.

She is survived by her children, Doris Dumas and husband, J.D, Anna Holtzclaw 
and husband, Fred, George Shannon, Sheila Baldwin, Julie Newman and husband, 
Bart, Sylvia Putnam and husband, Randy, John Shannon M.D., Robert Shannon and 
wife, Tammy, Bessie Louise Schooley and husband, Jarrod; twenty grandchildren; 
thirteen great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Jay Dumas M.D., Jeffery Dumas, Michael Shannon, George 
Larry Baldwin, Jonathan Baldwin, Jonathan Newman, and Joseph Newman, Bryan 
Shannon, and Xander Schooley. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kenn Hall, J.D. 
Dumas, Fred Holtzclaw, Randy Putnam, Bart Newman, and Jarrod Schooley.

Visitation will be held from 5:00PM until 8:00PM Monday, August 17, 2015 at 
Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe.

Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice .
