Shemwell, MD, 80 of Monroe, LA will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, September 10, 2016 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Monroe, with Rev. Tim Neustifter officiating, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe. Dr. Shemwell was born November 2, 1935 and passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife Virginia and his four children. He was an adored husband and father and a man of strong faith. He touched so many people in his life personally and professionally. His integrity and character were without question. Dr. Shemwell was born in Shreveport, LA and graduated from Fair Park, HS. He then went on to graduate from Centenary College with a BS Degree in 1957 and graduated from LSU School of Medicine with an MD degree in 1962. After his internship at Confederate Memorial in Shreveport, he completed his Fellowship at Ochsner Medical Foundation in New Orleans, LA in 1969. He completed his military duty in the USA Medical Corps in 1965. He was a practicing OB/GYN and joined the Woman's Clinic in Monroe as one of its first physicians. He retired from private practice in 1995 and then went on to be a clinical professor of OB/GYN at the LSU School of Medicine EA Conway Memorial Hospital where he had previously been the acting Chief of OB/GYN in 1979. Dr. Shemwell was the Co-Discoverer of the Ovarian Remnant Syndrome and the first person to use the laparoscope in the State of Louisiana. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of both the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopists and the American Fertility Society. He represented Louisiana for one term in the Southeastern OB/GYN Society and was the American College of OB/GYN representative on the first advisory Counsel of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology for Louisiana. Dr. Shemwell was a faithful member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church for many years. He was an avid duck hunter and cherished his time at Mallard Farms with his sons and his many friends. He is preceded in death by his father, Joseph Carlton Shemwell, his mother Mildred Stoddard Shemwell, and his brother John Howard Shemwell, and his mother-in-law and father-in-law Joseph Shelby and Virginia Cage. Survivors include his devoted wife of 55 years, Virginia Cage Shemwell, and his four children who loved him with all their hearts, Catherine Shemwell, Ron Shemwell, Clay Shemwell and Claire Shemwell Brockman. He was the father- in-law to Reba Shemwell, Ginger Shemwell, Wes Brockman, and Amber Shemwell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, whom he adored, Laine Shemwell, Annabelle Shemwell, Blair Shemwell, Rachel Santee, Randolph Brockman, Nory Brockman, and Ava Brockman. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Mike Cage, Mike Cage, Jr., Joe Cage, Randolph Brockman, Dr. Randy Hall, Jim Goldman, Dr. Richard Vines, Joe Jarred, and Joey Bales. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
