SHERMAN Funeral services for Julius Rahn Sherman, Jr., MD, age 72, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, April 3, 2017, at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Monroe, LA, with Rev. Job Edathinatt officiating. Interment will follow at the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA. Rahn passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017, at his home. He was born on September 22, 1944, in Moultrie, GA, to J.R. and Anna Clair (Waller) Sherman. Dr. Sherman graduated from Northwestern State College with a B.S. in chemistry. He attended Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans and graduated in 1970. Following graduation, he interned at Confederate Memorial Hospital in Shreveport from 1970-1971. He practiced general medicine in Haynesville, LA, from 1971-1974. He completed a psychiatry residency at LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport, LA, in 1977, and was a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He practiced psychiatry at the Shreveport Mental Health Center from 1977-1981. He worked for the Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse from 1981-1984 as Area II Director, Deputy Assistant Secretary, and Assistant Secretary. He was Medical Director at Woodland Hills Hospital from 1984-1987, and Medical Director at HCA North Monroe Pavilion from 1988-1993. He had a private practice in psychiatry from 1984 until his retirement. Rahn was an inveterate outdoorsman and raconteur. He spent countless hours either on his back porch "holding court" or at his beloved Riverland, giving advice and guidance to all who would listen. Rahn was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Norma Lemoine Sherman; sons, Julius Rahn Sherman, III, "Trey" and wife Amy, and Forest Blair Sherman and wife Allison; daughter, Aimee Sherman Glasgow and husband Richard; grandchildren, Sallie Elizabeth Sherman, Meghan Lynn Sherman, Samuel McKinley Sherman, Margaret Ann Sherman, Forrest Blair Sherman, and Katherine Sherman Glasgow; brother Eddy Waller Sherman and wife Kate; sister Clair Sherman Traylor and husband Bill; numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews; and longtime friend Ruthie Player. Pallbearers will be David Chavez, Dhu Thomson, Greg Thompson, Sam Sherman, Joe Traigle, Don Marx, Markley Huey, and Bill Bourn. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Traylor, Dave Schaffer, Sherman Shaw, Billy Shaw, and Dick Crane. Visitation will be 4:00 - 7:00 PM, with a vigil wake at 6:00 PM, Sunday, April 2, 2017, at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, LA. The family extends a special thanks to Rahn's longtime friend and physician, Dr. Michael Sampognaro, as well as Dr. Coy Gammage. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a Catholic school of your choice, to the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum, or to the National Wild Turkey Federation.
