He was born and raised in Tylertown, MS. He studied music at Louisiana State University and received a Bachelors of Arts in Music from Florida State University. He received a Masters of English from New York University. He was awarded his Doctorate in English from the University of Virginia. He taught for two years at North Texas State University in Denton. He joined the Tulane University faculty in 1967 where he spent the remainder of his academic career as an English professor and Shakespearian scholar. He was named Professor Emeritus in 2004. A classically trained pianist, he played the organ in church as a child. As an adult, he served as organist for the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in New Orleans, for Tylertown United Methodist Church, and, in Monroe, for St. Alban's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth Fuller Simmons and Catherine Edna Simmons (Jerry Arnold) both of Monroe, LA and Jean Randle Simmons (Edward Stenger) of Shaker Heights, OH, his grandchildren, Zachary Matthew Stenger, William Levon Arnold and Ava Catherine Stenger, as well as his former wife, Fleur Simmons of Monroe, LA, and his dear nieces, nephew and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Oliver Simmons, and mother, Nita Packwood Simmons, of Tylertown, MS, and his sister, Nita Jean Simmons Randle of Starkville, MS. Funeral Services will be held in Monroe, LA at St. Alban's Episcopal Church on September 10th at 1pm and in Tylertown, MS at Tylertown United Methodist Church on September 11th at 3pm.
