Reinowski will officiate the memorial service. Penny, or Aunt Penny as she is known to so many, was born in Shreveport, LA on October 3, 1942 to parents Gertrude Edwards Sims and Alton Yeldell Sims. Soon thereafter, their family moved to Bastrop. Penny graduated from Bastrop High School and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She returned to the University of Louisiana-Monroe, then NLU, to complete a degree in Elementary Education. After several years teaching at a Catholic elementary school in Houston, TX after college, Penny returned to Bastrop to instruct in the Morehouse Parish School System, including West Side and East Side Elementary Schools in Bastrop. She was awarded the Outstanding Math Educator Award in 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999 and was recognized in 2000 for her more than 30 years of Outstanding Service to the children of Morehouse Parish. Throughout her life, Penny was interested in helping children reach their highest potential, making even the hardest of math challenges attainable. Fun-loving, a rebel at heart and a champion of the underdog, Penny was known for her passion for rescuing stray animals, her talent for teaching young minds, her extraordinary gift for storytelling, her ability to elevate even the simplest of recipes with "secret" ingredients, and for her not so secret love of fast cars. Penny was a devoted friend and care giver to many in need. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister-in-law, Vikki Nielsen Sims. She is survived by her brother, Don Madison Sims; her nephew, Cole Nielsen Sims and his wife, Paige; her niece, Maré Sims Brennan and her husband, Steve; her great nieces and nephews, Patton Pankey Sims, Mollie Frances Sims, Sarah Jane Sims, Madison Elle Brennan, Blaine Cameron Brennan and Barrie Colleen Brennan. Her cousins, Jackie Yeldell and wife, Ellen; John Michael Yeldell; and Elizabeth Barham Wagner and her husband, Emile. She especially adored her favorite quartet, the Wagner girls, Lori Wagner; Catherine Wagner, Rachel Wagner Epperson and her husband, Lee, and children, Sarah and Alan; and Kimberly Wagner Fehrs and her husband, Matt, and son, Owen; and reveled in their accomplishments. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Penny are asked to donate to her beloved Morehouse Humane Society (She loved a good rescue of a feral dog or cat, but never a lizard.) PO Box 87, Bastrop, LA 71221 or to the National Marfan Foundation, 22 Manhasssat Ave., Port Washington, NY 11050 Though Penny was short in stature, she made up for it with her generosity of spirit.
