SMITH Col. Jimmy W. Smith, 79, passed away Thurs. July 17, 2014 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS. Visitation will be held on Fri. July 18, 2014 from 5pm-8pm at Ott & Lee Funeral Home in Brandon, MS and from 12pm-2pm on Sat. July 19, 2014 at Park Place Baptist Church in Pearl, MS. Funeral Services will be at 2pm on Sat. July 19, 2014 at Park Place Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Lakeland Place Garden Park Cemetery in Brandon, MS. Col. Smith was born on March 24, 1935 in Haile, LA and has lived in Brandon, MS since 1984 after moving from New Orleans, LA. He was an active member of Park Place Baptist Church in Pearl, MS where he served on various committees. Col. Smith was a graduate from Northeast University in Monroe, LA. He retired in 1981 after 25 years of service in the U.S. Army serving in Germany, South Korea, Vietnam, and Iran. For his services he was awarded the Legion of Merit with a Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Col. Smith also retired in 1991 from the Federal Land Bank. He is survived by his wife, Martye Smith of Brandon, MS; three children, Michael Smith (Pam) of New Orleans, LA, Jason Smith (Lisa) of Brandon, MS, and, Shannon Hoover (Jim) of Brandon, MS; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Col. Smith was preceded in death by his parents. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed. The family wishes that any memorials be made to Hospice Ministries at 450 Town Center Blvd. Ridgeland, MS 39157 or to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Mississippi Chapter at 1907 Dunbarton Dr. Suite C Jackson, MS 39216.
