BELLE GARDNER SMITH

Funeral services for Mrs. Belle Gardner Smith will be held Saturday, February 
14, 2015, at 11:00 A.M. at Mount Zion Baptist Church of Delhi, LA; visitation 
at 10:00 A.M.

Mrs. Smith, born to the late James and Gertrude Donaldson Gardner on July 3, 
1916, in Monroe, LA, departed this life on Monday, February 2, 2015.

She united in holy matrimony with Charlie Moses (C. M.) Smith in September 
1936. Twelve children were born to this union.

She attended school in Ouachita Parish when the school system was not favorable 
to African-Americans. Nevertheless, she excelled in school and later used her 
education to assist her husband in purchasing a farm that successfully 
sustained her family.

Mrs. Smith's life was dedicated to family. Nurturing her children from infancy 
to adulthood was the joy of her life. She enjoyed and looked forward to visits 
from her children, grand children, nieces and nephews.

She leaves to cherish her memory sisters, Rosie Lee Gardner and Annie Hudson, 
Monroe, LA; daughters, Luvillie White, Gardena, CA, Viola Young, Delhi, LA, and 
Etta B. Smith, Washington, DC; sons, Johnny Lee Smith, Delhi, LA, Sampson 
Smith, Los Angeles, CA, James Smith, Inglewood, CA, Joe Smith, Los Angeles, CA, 
Leon Smith, Delhi, LA, Robert Lee Smith, Portland, OR, Charles Smith, Fairfax, 
VA, and adopted son, Jesse Washington, Delhi, LA; twenty grand children, 
thirty-four great grand children, and seven great-great grand children; 
brothers-in-law, Allen Brown, Delhi, LA and Herman Smith, Carson, CA; nieces, 
nephews, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, C. M. Smith; son, Jesse Smith; 
daughter, Dorothy Smith; grandson, Aumont Smith; sisters, Sallie Ceaser 
Williams, Katie Stubblefield Spears, Martha Brown, Mary Stubblefield and 
Gertrude Waller; brothers, James (Jim) Gardner, Robert Gardner and Berry (T.D.) 
Gardner.
