Alice was born August 8, 1931 to Frances and Moselle Perry and raised in Perryville on her grandfather's Little Bell plantation. She fondly recalled her childhood playing baseball with the local children, riding horses and playing in the spring-fed swimming hole, known as "The Crater". Fortunately, her children got to swim and swing on the great rope swing there, as well as ring the big bell and nap on the hanging porch bed at the beautiful, family home. She graduated from Ouachita Parish High School where she was a cheerleader and a Homecoming Queen and was a Homecoming Queen at Northeast Louisiana University as well, receiving her degree in education. After raising four children, Alice taught in the Ouachita Parish School System and at the Northeast Louisiana Technical College in Bastrop. Alice was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was known as "Assi" to her seven grandchildren and great granddaughter. She loved gardening, bird watching, cooking and being in the outdoors. She was preceded in death by her father, Mose Perry and mother, Frances Perry and daughter-in-law, Pam Medak Smith. She is survived by her children, David Perry Smith, Lon Smith and his partner, Katie Holmes, Fran Smith Ward and Amy Smith Yates and her husband, Mark Yates; brother, James A. Perry and his wife, JoAnn and their children, James B. Perry and wife, Tonya and Karen P. Murphy and husband, Guy; her grandchildren are Perry Smith and Tyler Liner, Alice Marie Smith and Clay Blanchard, Zach Smith, Grayson Ward, Taylor Ward, Brooke Lauve and Chris Grayson, Olivia Lauve and her great granddaughter, Emory Grayson; ex-husband, Jack L. Smith. The family would like to thank Dona Bryan RN with Hospice Family Alliance and Mama's special friends and caretakers Michelle Taylor, Fualili Estevan, Tia Tillery and Delores Tillery for the exceptional and loving support. A service of remembrance will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 12th at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with The Reverend Dawnell Stodghill officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Columbarium under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in her honor to the Ouachita Parish Humane Society or the charity of your choice .
