JOHN BENDEL SMITH 

Moss Funeral Home Breese, Illinois 

John B. Smith, 78, of Breese, Illinois, was born in Monroe, LA., September 20, 
1930 and died July 9, 2009 in Breese, IL. after a short battle with Cancer. 
Mr. Smith graduated from Neville High School and attended LA. Tech. He was a 
former professional pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates Farm Club.; A USAF 
Veteran as a Fighter Pilot during the Korean Conflict; and retired as a 
salesman. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church of Breese, IL. He was 
preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Inez Richman Smith; Brothers: 
Kenneth W. Smith, Guy L. Smith and Kerry Bruce Smith. Survivors are his wife 
of 55 years, Virginia Holten Smith of Breese, IL. and children: John B. Smith, 
Jr. (Martha), Anthony Smith of Olympia, WA.; Virginia Wagner (Stephen) of 
Columbia, IL; Susan Garriss (Ray) of Wallace, N. C.; Michael Smith (Kimberly) 
of O'Fallon, IL.; and Julieann Smith of Breese, IL.; 10 Grandchildren and 1 
Great Grandchild: Sisters: Catherine Upshaw (Travis) of Burleson, TX. and 
Florence Smith Peters of Monroe, LA. and a close family friend, Tom Sharkey 
(Mary) of Virginia. Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until 9:45 A.M., 
Wednesday, July 15, 2009. A Memorial Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, 
July 15, 2009, at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Breese, IL., with Father Ben 
Stern officiating. Internment will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery 
in St. Louis, MO. Memorials may be made to The American Lung Association and 
will be received by the Funeral Home.
