Interment will follow at Gwin Cemetery in Mangham, LA. Mrs. Smith passed away after a long battle with cancer on January 27, 2017 with her granddaughter, Adrienne, by her side. She grew up in Midland, CA, was the valedictorian of Palo Verde High in 1952, and moved to Monroe in 1953 after she and Jimmy were married. She and her family attended Southside Baptist and Lakeshore Baptist Churches in Monroe. She was a Past President of the Insurance Women in Monroe and worked at McKenzie and Mouk before moving to Houma, LA, where she and Jimmy opened AAA Vacuum. They retired back to Monroe in 2003. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Leonard Smith; and her two sons, James Lawrence (Larry) Smith, and Donald Lee Smith. She is survived by her sister, Betty Karr Case (Springhill, CA); her daughter Dr. Valerie Smith Batley-Brown and husband Russ; daughters-in-law Cedolia Smith & Melanie Smith; & grandchildren; Jessica McDonald (Adam), Maribeth Smith, Sheryl Smith, Christopher Batley (Angel), Adrienne Batley Willhite, Melissa Smith Holt (Jonathan), Michelle Smith Hunter (Hogan), & Marie Smith Dunning (Joe); &15 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Chris Batley, Brad Arnold, Clint Brown, Cory Brown, & Josh Brown. Visitation will be 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM Sunday, January 29, 2017. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Louisiana Library for the Blind via the Mrs. W. Carruth Jones Foundation for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, 1131 N. River Road, Port Allen, LA 70767.
