"Coach Buck," as he was affectionately known, was born on October 29, 1934, in Ruston, Louisiana, and died on February 27, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer. Buck was a graduate of Ruston High School where he played football for L.J. "Hoss" Garrett. He was a captain and the quarterback on Coach Garrett's 1951 state championship football team. After graduating from high school, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps. He later returned to Louisiana Tech University and played football for Joe Aillet, earning all-conference honors. He received his B.S. in Health & P.E. and his M.S. in Education & Administration from Louisiana Tech. He also received a+30 in Education and Administration from Louisiana Tech and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Buck was quick to credit Coaches Garrett and Aillet for teaching him discipline, the value of hard work, and the importance of academics, traits that defined his career as a dedicated educator in the Monroe City Schools. He served as a teacher and coach at Neville High School, a principal at Lexington Elementary School, and returned to Neville as principal before retiring in 1994. He also served as the Interim Director at A.E. Phillips Lab School at Louisiana Tech and the Interim Principal at Hillcrest Elementary School in Ruston. Buck's family was his pride and joy. He had an undeniable zest for life and was a man of uncompromising principle. To his friends, he was known for his fierce loyalty, infectious personality, and generous heart. His enthusiasm and attention to detail were hallmarks of his character. After retirement, Buck enjoyed spending time on his property in Lincoln Parish. He was most proud of the pond that he built and stocked for his family's enjoyment. This became his personal sanctuary. Buck was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Stewart, his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Taylor, and his grandson, Charles William Stewart, II. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Patsy; his daughter, Holly Stewart Ratcliff and husband, Douglas James Ratcliff; his son, William Buckley Stewart, Sr., and wife, Lynda Kinard Stewart; his beloved grandchildren, Taylor Anne Ratcliff and William Buckley Stewart, Jr.; his sister, Billie Jo Whiteside; and, his two nephews, Doug Kirklin and wife, Penny, and Joel Kirklin and wife, Dee.
