Visitation will be at Gill First National Home in Winnsboro from 5:00PM to 7:00PM on Monday February 27, 2017.Bertie Stewart was born December 7, 1919 in Crowville, LA, and passed from this Life on February 25, 2017. She was 97 years of age. Bertie is preceded in death by her husband, Charles Stewart; her parents Tolbert and Addie DeWitt and her brothers: Guy, Royce and Earl DeWitt. She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter Melba Shoemaker and husband Murray, her great grandson Matt Smith and wife LeSha and her great, great grandson Kaden. Bertie Stewart graduated from Crowville High School in 1937 and from Louisiana Tech in 1940 and also attended Peabody in Nashville, Tennessee. She taught math at Bastrop High School, Oak Grove High School, Central High School, Crowville High School, Franklin Academy and Winnsboro High School serving as Beta Club sponsor at Crowville High where she spent most of her teaching career. After retiring she, occasionally, tutored students in her home. Bertie was a wonderful mother always having time to listen to any problem, concern or joy that her daughter might have wanted to share and being able to see more than one side of a problem or situation as she offered advice. She loved her family dearly. Bertie liked working outside and mowing the yard and was willing to take in any stray dog or cat that came her way. She was a great cook and a seamstress as well. Bertie was an active member of First Baptist Church Crowville teaching a variety of classes, as well as being Vacation Bible School Director for many years. Her family didn't get up on Sunday morning wondering if they'd go to church; they knew they would. Demonstrating her faith was not just about going to church; she lived her faith seven days a week. She bestowed one of life's greatest blessings on her daughter by being a consistent Christian mother for over 69 years. Those serving as pallbearers are as follows: Tony Amos, Luke Amos, Tyler Amos, Chris Ward, Nick Poulos and Frank Poulos. Online condolences may be made at www.gillfirstnational.com .
