He was surrounded by family, including his wife of 74 years, Ruth Smith Strain. Brother Mickey Bounds will officiate the funeral services which will be held at First Baptist Church in Delhi, LA on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Jonesboro, LA. Services are under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Born in Jonesboro, LA on December 14, 1917, he was a 1936 graduate of Weston High School. A.O. served in the United States Army during World War II as a member of the 718th Railway Operating Battalion which was attached to General George Patton's Third Army. His company was given credit for four battle stars and the Meritorious Service Medal. Mr. Strain worked for Louisiana Gas for 37 years before retiring in 1982. He has spent many years farming trees on his property in Jackson parish. A lifetime gardener, his bounty was enjoyed by many. He was often knocking on friends and neighbors doors making deliveries from the latest harvest. Mr. Strain became a member of First Baptist Church of Delhi in 1956. He served the church in many capacities including church treasurer for 37 years, chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for over 30 years, the Personnel Committee, and as a deacon for 45 years. His faith and dedication to his church and church family have been an inspiration to all who knew him. A.O. is survived by his wife, Ruth Smith Strain of Delhi, LA; daughter, Cheryl Strain Thompson and her husband Clyde of Delhi ; son, Ronnie Strain of Jonesboro; sisters, Jo Layne Strain Conn of El Dorado, AR and Ruth Strain Jones of Shreveport, LA. He also leaves behind three grandchildren Dena Dishongh Gielen and her husband Chad, Deidre Dishongh Ardoin and her husband Ron, and Katherine Strain; seven great grandchildren Emma and Daniel Gielen, Chelsey Marshall, Mallory Clarke, Andrew and Erin Bass, and Kayelynn Strain: and three great-great grandchildren Gavin and Owen Marshall and Cooper Daniel. He is preceded in death by his parents, Malory and Janie Strain; sister, Verlene Strain Kennedy; brother, W, T. Strain; and grandchild, Ryan Strain. Pallbearers will be Chad Gielen, Dwight Clarke, Justin Beach, Mark Kennedy, Tim Kennedy, and Randy Kennedy. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 9:00 AM - 12:00PM at Cox Funeral Home in Delhi, LA.
