J.D. Strickland, beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, brother, and uncle died January 6, 2010, after several years of battling COPD and heart disease. Services for J.D. will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 9, 2010 at Kilpatrick's Funeral Home on Lamy Lane with interment to follow in Mulhearn's Memorial Park cemetery on Highway 80 in Monroe under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe. J.D.'s brother-in-law, Bro. Michael Woods of Winnsboro, LA will conduct the service. Anyone desiring to contribute additional remarks about J.D. is encouraged to do so. J.D. was born on February 23, 1936, in Farmerville to Barney and Effie (Cruse) Strickland. He grew up in Ruston, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers: Curtis, George, and James Strickland; 3 sisters: Flora Roane, Barnette Zachary, and Robbie Lee Mandrell. J.D. is survived by his wife: Wilma; 2 daughters: Lt. Debra Strickland, Shreveport Police Department, Lisa Bailey and husband, Carl of Hawkins, TX; 2 step-daughters: Donna Mathys Bancks and husband, George of Choudrant, LA, and Rebecca Mathys Florsheim of Monroe, LA. J.D. enjoyed his grand-children: Tina and Chris Bailey, Jeremy Upton and wife, Candice, and Emily Mathewes, all of Choudrant, LA and Caroline Florsheim, of Monroe. He also leaves one sister: Gladys Johnson of Ruston and several nieces and nephews. J.D. and Wilma were fortunate to have their children and grand- children live close to them which allowed them to attend ballgames, dance, piano, voice recitals, and theater performances. He particularly enjoyed driving his granddaughter, Caroline, to and from school with a stop for ice cream daily on the way home. He was called "Papaw" by many of the children in her classes at Grace Episcopal School. J.D. retired as a Construction Supervisor and Bricklayer from Stebbin's Engineering in 1996. He became a member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen in June, 1955, and received recognition as a life-member. J.D. was a hard worker who enjoyed and valued his work. After family and work, J.D. prized deer hunting with his brother, James of Ruston, and nephews Terry Strickland of Calhoun, LA and Randy Reel of Hallsville, TX. Pallbearers will be Terry Strickland, Rendy Reel, and Jared Wilson, John Tyler Ulmer, and Shane Easterling, all of Winnsboro, LA, and Monty Wisenor of Monroe, LA. Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Friday, January 8, 2010 at Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe, LA.
