Roy Telano and Rev. Dale Bostic officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, Monroe, LA. Mrs. LaVerne Telano was raised in the oil fields of East Texas. The Smith family lived there in New London until the historic gas explosion in the local high school that took the lives of an older brother and two older sisters. This tragedy affected hundreds of families. In those days gas had no scent, so an unpleasant odor was added to natural gas that allows for the detection of gas leaks to prevent future tragedy. Her devastated family moved to Louisiana where she later met and fell in love with her sweetheart, Chris Telano. They remained sweethearts for 64 years. LaVerne's life can be summed up in two words; family and church. Her greatest indulgence was to travel, and she and Chris rarely took a vacation that the children and grandchildren weren't invited to go along. She was only content when she had traveled to all 50 states and her plate collection from each one is still a treasure to her family. Her sons and daughters, son-in-laws and daughter-in-laws, and every grandchild has known the joy of rising early and not stopping until late to see and experience all the beauty of God's creation at every vacation location. Photo albums filled with pictures of these treasured times will help sustain her family for years to come, including those of her riding a horse on a Colorado mountain trail at the age of 74. She was not to be out-done by kids and grandkids. When vacation was over, you could still get a Kool-aid popsicle and enjoy the backyard pool she had built for her family and the church youth. Only her love for God and His church surpassed her love for family. She and Chris read the Bible through many times. They visited the sick every Sunday afternoon and had church members in their home for a meal as often as possible. In exchange for your meal you would probably be expected to enjoy a game of Chinese Checkers or Uno! Her favorite service was Sunday School. She faithfully studied her lesson and looked forward to the teaching of the Word of God. Then she went home and put the Word she was taught into practice. Mrs. Telano is preceded in death by her parents, Lovett Bud and Ruthie Mae Smith, brother, Abner Smith, sisters, Willine Smith and Maxie Mae Smith, and great grandchild, Gabriel Marlin.
