Doc, as he was affectionately called, grew up in Neosho, Missouri where he graduated from Neosho High School in 1949. He was very proud of the fact that as a sophomore, he was elected student body president. Paul had a scholarship to play football at Kansas State University, but realized that he wanted to focus on his future career in medicine. Therefore, he decided against football and accepted an Honors Scholarship to Tulane University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952. While attending Tulane, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity, Nu Sigma Nu Professional Fraternity for Medicine, and was also Vice President of Tulane's Arts and Science School in 1952. Paul then attended Tulane Medical School, receiving his M. D. in 1956. Paul's post graduate training included a rotating internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA, a one year surgical residency, and a urology residency from 1958 to 1961 also at Charity Hospital. Paul married Carol Louise Clark whom he met while she was attending Sophie Newcomb College of Tulane University. Paul and Carol moved to Monroe in 1961 where he began his private practice in Urology. Paul remained in private practice from 1961 until 2001. Paul and Dr. Burchell Liles founded the Urology Clinic where he practiced with Dr. Liles, his son Dr. Arthur Liles, Dr. Mike Cage and Dr. Brad Johnson. Doctor Paul Tennis was a past president of the Ouachita Medical Society (1975- 76), past president of the Louisiana State Urological Society, and a Board Member of St. Francis Hospital from 1992 - 2001. After retiring from St. Francis Hospital and private practice, Paul was employed as an Associate Professor/Director in Urology at LSU (Conway) Hospital in Monroe until 2013. Paul lived life to the fullest and was known for his many humorous life stories, especially his hunting and fishing tales which seemed to grow better and better over time. He was a member of the Bosco Fine Art Society Hunting Club, and a frequent hunter/visitor of Giles Island. At Al Beachum's Liberty, Mississippi Hunting Club, he killed over 200+ wild turkeys. During his many hunting trips, he travelled the United States including the Yukon Territory, New Zealand, Australia, and Africa. He enjoyed travelling and hunting with his good friends, Dr. Al Beachum of Lafayette, LA and Dr. Larry Barr of West Monroe, LA. While on safari with Dr. Barr, he bagged the Big 3: a Lion, a Cape Buffalo, and an Elephant which he was so proud of. Some of his other trophies include: A Red Stag, a Sable, a Kudu, a Tar, a Kafue Lechwe, a Black Lechwe, and a Roan. He was the 150th member of the Grand Slam Club of North America, a club whose members have killed all four varieties of Big Horn sheep in North America. Paul loved a good time, whether hunting, fishing, playing tennis, or cherishing his family and many friends, who supported him thru all the days of his life. He loved medicine and all of his patients, treating them as family. He was a true gentleman and a great role model to all who knew him. The family extends special thanks to the physicians and medical staff at St. Francis Medical Center, especially Dr. Bart Liles, Dr. Keith White, and Dr. Walter Sartor, all of whom provided excellent care and support to him and his family.
