She was a native of Monroe and had been a thirty-five year resident of Sulphur. Marilyn was a world renowned cake decorating instructor having her work displayed in several magazines. She was a founding member of the Louisiana ICES. She was the former President of the Louisiana Civilian Re-enacting Association and received the Molly Pitcher Award from the United States Field Artillery Association. Marilyn was one of the longest living heart recipients in the state of Louisiana, whom received her gift from Justin Harrison and his family of Lafayette. Through this gift, she had become an advocate for the Louisiana Organ Procurement Association. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who was a great supporter of any activities that her family was involved in, including rodeos, ball games, and other sporting events. Survivors include her sons, Gerald Scott Thorn and wife, Bonnie of Lake Charles, Gregory Steven Thorn and wife, Maria of Geismer, and Geoffrey Spencer Thorn of DeRidder; her former daughter-in-law and primary caregiver, Shannon Thorn of Sulphur; her siblings, Wayne Sandlin and wife, Lynn of Houston, Texas and Sandi Beeson and husband, Steve of Katy, Texas; and seven grandchildren, Lauren Thorn, Tristin Thorn, Spencer Thorn and wife, Katherine, Cody Thorn, Damon Thorn, Cameron Thorn, and Claire Hohensee; great-grandchild, Breland Cooper Thorn, with another one on the way; her Stonebridge Place family; and numerous extended family members whom she welcomed into her heart. She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald S. Thorn. Her funeral will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 22, in Hixson-Sulphur Memorial Funeral Home. Rex Brasher will officiate. Visitation is from 3-9 p.m. Friday. A graveside service will be held in Riverside Cemetery in Monroe on Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m. The family would like to give a special thank you to Ochsner Medical Center and West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital for their excellent care of Marilyn.
