Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Rd, Monroe, La James Edwin Tolson, Sr., 88 years old, of Monroe, Louisiana, passed peacefully from this life to be with our Lord on October 12, 2009. Jimmy was born on October 25, 1920 and lived his entire life in Monroe. Jimmy graduated from Ouachita High School in May 1938. After working at Jitney Jungle and beginning what would become his 44 year career at The Palace Dept. Store, Jimmy enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served his country in Europe through the completion of WWII. He served his country for three and a half years, achieving the rank of First Sergeant, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Upon his return, Jimmy resumed his career at The Palace where he managed the Shoe Dept. and married Shirley Marie Edelen. Jimmy and Marie had two boys, James Edwin Tolson, Jr. and Randy Michael Tolson. After Marie's death in 1972 and 25 years of marriage, Jimmy remarried to Ruth Kilgore Henry. Jimmy and Ruth enjoyed 36 years of marriage before his passing. He was well known for his positive spirit and his excellent cooking. He was loved by many beyond his family and everyone he met immediately became his friend. Jimmy spent his post retirement years helping farmers at the farmers' markets in Monroe/West Monroe and acting as the "straw boss" at Petito's Strawberry Farm. Among his favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing with his friends and spending time with his wife, kids and grand children. Jimmy was preceded in his death by his parents, James T Tolson and Nina Watson Tolson and by his brother, H. W. "Buddy" Tolson who passed earlier this year. Jimmy will be lovingly missed by his wife Ruth, his son Jim and his wife Suzi and their children Alexandra and James III and by his son Randy and his wife Nancy and their children Bethany and Melissa. He is also survived by his step children Tyler Henry and his wife Dianne, Melton Henry and his wife Jeane Marie and their son Bill, Elaine Henry and her husband Vince Chiodo and Elaine's daughter Elizabeth, and James Henry and his wife Jennie and their children Thomas, Miriam, Jennifer and Sally. Visitation will be held at Mulhearn's Funeral Home on Hwy. 165 in Monroe, Wednesday, October 14th from 5:30 P.M. to 7:30 pm. Services will be at Mulhearn's on Thursday, October 15th at 2:00 P.M. and will be presided over by Rev. Larry Stafford of the First United Methodist Church, Monroe. Graveside services to follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park on Hwy. 80 East. Honorary pall bearers are Ray Williams and Johnny Woodard. Pallbearers are Mike Andrus, Jimmy Johnson, Sal Petito, Max Stracener, Steve Tolson and Kyle Tolson. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to the staff at both Presbyterian Dallas and Presbyterian Plano hospitals as well as to the staff at The Legacy at Willow Bend in Plano, Texas for their caring and kindness for our loved one in his final days.
