VARINO Mulhearn Funeral Home St. John Street Monroe, LA Funeral services for Dr. Varino, 83, well known retired gynecologist and obstetrician, Monroe, will be at 10 a.m. Monday, November, 24, 1997 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Puthuppally officiating, assisted by Rev. Zachariah Prakuzhy, Rev. Tim Hurd, and Msgr. Edmund Moore. Burial will be in St. Matthew's Catholic Church Cemetery under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home. Dr. Varino died Friday afternoon, November 21, 1997 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. He was born in Monroe and attended St. Matthew's School and graduated from Ouachita Parish High School in 1930. He attended Tulane University from 1930 to 1932 and then attended Tulane Medical University from 1932 to 1936. He served his internship at New Orleans Charity Hospital from 1936 to 1937. He served as resident OB & GYN at the Tulane unit of New Orleans Charity Hospital from 1936 to 1939. He served as resident at Lafayette Charity Hospital from 1939 to 1940 and at Monroe charity from 1940 to 1941. He started his practice in 1941 in Monroe and retired in 1987. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church and received the Diocesan medal from Bishop Charles P. Greco. He married his wife, the former Bee Ann Landry, in 1940, who preceded him death in 1995. He was the first Board Diplomat of OB and GYN that practiced in Monroe and also the first fellow of American College OB and GYN. He was a member of the Ouachita Medical Society, and the Southern Medical Society. He was a member of the Bayou DeSiard Country Club and an avid golfer. He is survived by nine children: Georgette Sciortino and her husband, Dominick of New Orleans, LA; Elizabeth Morvant and her husband Dimitry of Mandeville, LA; Joy Ann Ortego and her husband, Brian of Washington, LA; Michelle Hagardorn and her husband, Douglas of Branscomb, CA; George A. Varino II of Monroe, LA; Rosalie Varino of New Orleans, LA; Maria Foley of New Orleans, LA; Teresa Varino of Opelousas, LA; and Joseph C. Varino of Waveland, MS; one brother, M. J. Varino of Monroe, LA; 25 grandchildren and 9 great- grandchildren; three nieces and two nephews. Pallbearers: Dominick Sciortino, Dom Sciortino, Brian Ortego, Buddy Ortego, George Carso, Dimitry Morvant, Dr. William Belsom and Frank Richard Varino. Honorary Pallbearers: M. Charlton, Joe Brown, Ed Miller, Dr. A. Altenberg, Dr. N. Klam, Dr. David Walsworth and all the members of the Ouachita Medical Society. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Mulhearn Funeral Home, St. John St., Monroe. A vigil wake service will be conducted at the funeral home at 7 p.m. The family requests that memorials be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society for feeding the needy in care of St. Matthews Catholic Church or to the American Cancer Society.
