Monday, October 27, 2008, at Riverview Cemetery with Rev. Gregg Riley officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mrs. Vaughan died October 22, 2008 in Marietta, GA. The former Maria Brooking Wooten was born November 5, 1911 in Monroe. She was raised on the lower Pargoud Plantation on South Grand Street and graduated from the Ouachita Parish school system. Her parents were the late Mr. & Mrs. James Roach Wooten of Monroe. Upon graduation from high school, Mrs. Vaughan attended the Normal College in Natchitoches, LA. After graduation, she taught the primary grades in Sterlington, LA. In 1934, Mrs. Vaughan married Mr. Vaughan in a lovely home wedding on Thanksgiving Day. Mr. & Mrs. Vaughan lived up north for 35 years and returned to Monroe to live in the family home in their retirement. Mrs. Vaughan was a member of the DAR, The Colonial Dames in the state of Louisiana, was on the board of the Masur Museum of Art, and was past President of the Monroe Garden Club. She and Mr. Vaughan volunteered at the poles during elections. Mr. Vaughan preceded her in death in 1992. Mrs. Vaughan moved to Marietta, GA to live with her daughter where she remained until this time. She leaves behind two children, Melville Vaughan, Jr. of Memphis, TN, and Mrs. Maria Vaughan Kistler of Marietta, GA; two grandsons, and six great- grandchildren in Atlanta, GA; two nieces, Mrs. Roy Johns of Monroe, and Mrs. Lee Pierson of Monroe; a nephew, Elmer Slagle of Dallas, TX; plus many great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Monday from 11:00 A.M. until 12:00 P.M at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
