J. Roddy Taylor and Rev. JoAnn Cooper officiating. Interment will follow at Christ Church Cemetery in Bastrop, LA, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Gwen was born on September 8, 1924 in Alto, LA, and passed away peacefully at home on April 26, 2014. She is survived by two daughters, Catherine "Kitty" Vaughan Murphy and husband Glenn of Alexandria, LA, and Mary Vaughan Richardson and husband Glen of Monroe; five grandchildren, Charles Mark Murphy and wife Christy of Shreveport, Beth Murphy Mahaffey and husband Mark of Baton Rouge, Rebecca Richardson of Dallas, TX, Angie Richardson of Monroe, and Julie Richardson Ramsey and husband Dobson of Shreveport; seven great grandchildren, Karlie, Nathan, McKenzie, Madison, Charlie, Max, and Jack; and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Vaughan III; parents, John Ainsley and Lucille Lyles Ball; and her three brothers, Dr. James E. Ball, John A. Ball, Jr., and W. Eugene Ball. After graduating from Mangham High School and Louisiana Polytechnic Institute, she worked for Louisiana Power and Light Company as a home service representative. There she met Charlie with whom she enjoyed sixty years of marriage. Gwen considered her church life a big priority. She and Charlie joined Lea Joyner to help establish Southside United Methodist Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher and chancel choir member. In 1968 they returned to First United Methodist Church and became an active member of the Anna Gray Noe Class and served on several church committees. In the community, Gwen was a member of the Twentieth Century Book Club for forty years, and served in leadership roles in the Alpha Chi Omega Alumnae Association and the DAR. She was an avid reader of her Bible, devotionals and other literature, and was always interested in learning. She and Charlie loved to travel, research their family histories, and care for their yard. But above all, she found great joy in spending time with her family, extended family, and many friends. Gwen leaves behind a wonderful legacy of serving God. Her sweet and caring spirit was exemplified through many acts of hospitality, encouragement, and kindness. She loved writing notes and cards, visiting the elderly, and praying for family and friends. Visitation will be 12:45 PM until 2:45 PM Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the church. The family would like to thank her caregivers Emma, Lena, Linda, Marrunda, and Teresa for their attentiveness and devoted care this past year. We would also like to thank Hospice Compassus for their professional care and compassion. Gwen was blessed with close neighbors, friends, church family, and her dog Missy who were all a network of love and support. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 3900 Loop Road, Monroe, LA, 71201, or Mercy Ministries of America, P.O. Box 111060, Nashville, TN 37222.
