Jay was born on March 22, 1953 to Elbert and Marie Via. He grew up in Monroe, where he graduated from Wossman High School. Later, he began his career in law enforcement with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office, where he rose to the rank of Detective in the Criminal Division, and later as Commander of Metro Narcotics. He retired from OPSO in 2001, with 28 years of service. Jay was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother, Elbert L. Via, Jr. (Bubba) and his wife, Linda; sisters, Yvonne Norman and her husband, Jack, and Rita Moak and her husband, Bobby. He is also survived by his children, John E. Via, Jr., Anjel Via Liles and her husband, Doug, Stephen Brent Via and his wife, Marcie, Bradley Via, and by grandchildren, Maisy Liles, Matthew Arendsen, and Scarlett Via, several step-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and loved ones, as well as his fiancée, Pattie Pipes. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, with a Memorial Service at 6:30 PM in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home Sterlington Road in Monroe, LA.
