She was 87 years old and had lived in Monroe for 56 years. Joy Vines lived a joyous and full life beginning in Danbury, Texas where she was born to Ida Merl Newell and John Pickney Blume, Sr. on April 14, 1930. Joy was the youngest of seven children, including her brothers Sydney Blume (Houston, Texas), John Pickney Blume, Jr., Kenneth Blume and her sisters Eileen Blume Dunn, Lois Blume Marbach, and Margie Blume Koonce. Joy is survived by her brother Sydney Blume. Joy grew up in Westlake, Louisiana, and graduated from Westlake High School in 1947, as her class's valedictorian. While in high school, Joy was named "Most Beautiful" in her high school. Joy then continued her education, graduating Magnum Cum Laude with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Business Education in 1951, from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now known as University of Louisiana - Lafayette). While attending Southwestern, Joy was a member of the Nu Sigma Kappa Sorority, the Red Jackets Girls, and elected Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges. Joy married Dr. Richard "Dick" V. Vines in 1952. During her marriage, Joy lived in New Orleans (during Dr. Vines' medical school and residency), Anchorage Alaska (at Fort Richardson in Anchorage during Dr. Vines service in the Army), and in Monroe since 1961. Dr. Vines and Mrs. Vines marriage allowed both to support one another in fulfilling each of their childhood dreams: fulfilling Dr. Vines' dream to be a quality physician, and fulfilling Mrs. Vines' dream to be a faithful wife and a full time mother who could raise her precious children, Cathy, Dickie and Ken, and nurture her many grandchildren and ever growing family. Throughout her life, Joy's family and friends were privileged to witness the True Love shared between Dick and Joy, from courtship in the 1950's in Westlake, Lafayette and New Orleans, through her final days in Monroe. Joy's efforts as a wife and mother spread love throughout the family and her community. From the days of the residency in New Orleans, Joy made sure that she made their meager income make it to the next payday, making Dr. Vines' education possible. After his medical training, regardless of the hour, Joy always was up in the morning to make sure her special love, Dr. Vines, had his breakfast before starting another grueling day. Dick was always assured that Joy had the family in good hands under her watchful eye as he left their house to serve his patients. Both of their dreams were realized through their hard work and true love. For the family, Joy always saw that Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays were special times. Joy called upon her secret recipes for her roasted turkey, cornbread dressing, and giblet gravy. Birthday celebrations always included Joy's "Tunnel of Fudge" cake and lots of candles. Whenever one of her children returned home she always made their favorite meal, and provided a heaping serving of love, guidance and motherly support. When her children or grandchildren participated in cheerleading, football games, swim meets, and other athletic events, Joy was always there. She was such a regular, that many of the teammates of her grandchildren knew her as "Mimi" just like her family. When her daughter, Cathy, was trying to live through her treatment for cancer, Joy went to every chemo and radiation appointment and treatment session, and always cooked homemade vegetable soup to nourish Cathy back to health. Those blessings are still growing today with her grandchildren and their wonderful spouses that have joined the family. Joy was a faithful member of Parkview Baptist Church throughout her life, teaching Sunday school teaching many ages and classes over the years. She was a member of the International Chapter P.E.O. Sisterhood, Woman's Medical Auxiliary of Ouachita Medical Society serving as President for one of her years. During Cathy's childhood, Joy served as a troop leader for the Brownie's and Girl Scouts. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Coy Gammage and the nurses and staff of the Oncology Clinic; Dr. David Raines; Dr. Greg Green and Christie Hogard at the Oliver Road Clinic; along with Dr. Mark Napoli, Dr. Jimmy Smith, Dr. Keith White, Dr. Charles Mason. The family also thanks Dr. John Bruchhaus, Dr. Prahabh Shrestha, Dr. Husam Al Sarmarah, and Ms. Sandra Browder with St. Francis Medical Center and all of the compassionate staff that assisted Joy during her hospitalizations. The family is also thankful for Joy's Parkview Sunday School Class for their love, support and prayers during her life and her last illness. Joy is survived by Dr. Richard Van Vines, the love of her life and husband of 65 years. Joy is also survived by all her children and their spouses, Cathy Vines Hurd and husband, Paul Loy Hurd, Dr. Richard Van Vines, II and wife, Melissa Ray Vines, and Kenneth Gus Vines and wife, Doll Johnston Vines.
