Oliver Glynn Walters, Sr., Pharm.D.

Services for Mr. Oliver Glynn Walters, Sr. Pharm.D., 83, of Rayville, LA will 
be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 11, 2008 at First Baptist Church Rayville Dr. 
Ernest Winburn will officiate. Internment in the Rayville Masonic Cemetery 
will follow under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Rayville, LA.

Oliver Walters was born on November 6, 1925 in Bienville, Louisiana to John 
Clinton Walters, Sr. and Susie Smith Walters. In 1940, the family moved to 
Rayville, Louisiana where Oliver attended high school. After graduating in 
1944, Oliver was selected for military service. He was inducted into the 
United States Army, Forty-second Rainbow Division on May 18, 1944. On December 
9, 1944 he and his division arrived in France. He was captured by German 
soldiers December 23, 1944 and spent the next several months of his life in 
German prison camps. Oliver was liberated by the British on March 23, 1945. 
After the war, Oliver enrolled in Northeast Junior College and met Joy Maxie. 
They married on July 25, 1948. Continuing with school, Oliver and Joy moved to 
the College of the Ozarks. Oliver was enrolled in pharmacy school. After the 
pharmacy school was moved to the University of Arkansas, they moved too. He 
continued until he graduated in 1954 from the University of Arkansas, College 
of Pharmacy, Little Rock, Arkansas. From this time until 1963 Oliver worked 
in / or owned stores in Shreveport; Bastrop; Monticello, Arkansas and 
Newellton, Louisiana. In 1963, he opened Walters; Drug Store in Rayville. He 
continued in the practice of pharmacy until his retirement in 2000. In 2004, 
Oliver received special recognition as a member of the first graduating class 
of the University Pharmacy School. He was a member of the 5th District 
Pharmaceutical Association, and was past president. He was a 25 year member of 
the American Legion in Rayville, the Northeast Chapter of American Ex-POWs and 
a member of the First Baptist Church Rayville, LA.

He was preceded in death by his parents John Clinton Walters, Sr., Susie Smith 
Walters and a sister-in-law Martha M. Walters.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joy Maxie Walters of Rayville, LA; 
daughters: Sara Elizabeth Walters Ware, and her husband Billy of Rayville, LA, 
Amy Joy Walters McMichael of Arlington, TX, Tamara Sue Walters Haynes and her 
husband Tony of Bastrop, LA; son: Oliver Glynn Walters, Jr. and his wife 
Sharon of Fayetteville, GA; brothers: Kermit L Walters, Sr. and his wife Joyce 
Ann of Rayville, LA and John Clinton Walters, Jr. and his wife Irene of St. 
Simon's Island, GA; grandchildren Erin Ware, Anna Ware, Emily M. Bennett and 
husband Derek, James McMichael, Katie Haynes, Alan Haynes, Macie Walters, Trey 
Walters, Beth Walters and Madison Walters.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews; James McMichael, Derek Bennett, 
Alan Haynes, Trey Walters, John Clinton Walters, III., Arthur Walters, Kermit 
L. Walters, Jr., Randy Walters, R. J. Walters and Lamar Walters.

Honorary Pallbearers are Tom Heath, Lamar Lane, Eddie Yancey, L. Yancey, 
Langston Yancey and Brent Greer.

Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 PM Monday, November 10, 2009 at the 
funeral home and 1:00 PM until service time Tuesday at the church.
