She is survived by her mother, Evelyn, of Farmerville; her two sisters, Jean Washam Hollis and husband, Steve, of Ruston; Leah L. L. Washam, of Monroe; and three nieces Maradith Jean Hollis of Mobile, Alabama, Lily Claire Washam-Coggins of North Richland Hills, Texas, and Kerry W. Harrell and husband Kevin of Fernandina Beach, Florida. She is pre-deceased by her daddy, Arthur C. Washam. Mac was a devout Christian and dedicated teacher, having started her career August 30, 1965, and retiring June 1, 1993. All but one year of her tenure was spend in the Union Parish School System. Though starting as an eighth grade English teacher, most of her working years were spent as the librarian of Farmerville Elementary School. She loved her fellow educators and "her" children. She had a kind and caring heart toward all children and particularly had a special compassion for those with problems. Mac was an important influence on her beloved nieces throughout their lives. She was never too busy to do whatever they needed and was a forever-willing babysitter in their younger years. Whether it was to play a fun game, read, or critique an essay for school, she was always at their beck and call. The best adjective to describe Mac is selfless. She spent many an hour helping others simply for the sheer joy of doing so. She particularly enjoyed staying with aging teacher friends when they needed a helping hand in the evening hours. It was her pleasure to assist now deceased Mrs. Bertha Lou Edwards and Mrs. Lucille Stewart, both of whom she dearly loved. To name all her special friends would be a daunting task, but her family would especially like to acknowledge the friendship and mentorship of Mrs. Marjorie Wade Terral, who has pre-deceased her. Spanning her career, there were many close and endearing friendships made; two of those quickly come to mind; Karen Howard Stephens and Gwen Richardson. Her high school friends, Frances Weaver Acree, Judy Armor Ryals, Sue Spears Green, Sybil Gilbert Silmon and Judy McLemore Barron have been forever faithful, several of whom came to visit during Mac's last days on this earth. Also very dear to her were Wilbur and Sybil Ganey. Knowing her love of reading, they brought her countless books, magazines, and other gifts over the years, never forgetting her birthday and Christmas. However, her favorite treat from them was the wonderful shrimp dinners, which delighted her greatly. Mac's extended family was very important to her. She loved visiting with any and all and particularly spent a great deal of time with two of her aunts, Maxine Brantley Davis, who pre-deceased her and for whom she was named, and Bobbie Jo Byrom Brantley. Aunt Mac, being a retired teacher, and Mac reminisced many hours about their teaching escapades. Aunt Bobbie Jo has been a most faithful visitor; Mac looked forward with anticipation to her fun visits and dining at their favorite Chinese restaurant. Many thanks go to the staff of Arbor Lake Rehab and Retirement Center of Farmerville and to her wonderful caregivers, Helen Barron, Kennon Ebarb, Gail Smith and Stephanie Smith. She has been blessed many times over with their unending love and kindness. Services are 10:00 AM Friday, March 14, 2014 at Farmerville Church of Christ at 306 E. Franklin Street under the direction of Farrar Funeral Home. Officiants are Jerry Keene and Don Stevens. Congregational singing will be led by Jim Rhodes. Pallbearers are: Bat Brantley, Kenny Brantley, Ethan Ginn, Gary Aldridge, and Jerry Ginn, all cousins of Mac, and Eddie Albritton, David Duty, and Bobby Fletcher. Honorary pallbearers are: Bruce Brantley, Glen Brantley, (both cousins), Robert Fowler, Alan Futch, Lance Futch, Calvin Miller, and Rickey Morris. Burial will be in Liberty Hill/Taylor Cemetery.
