R. "Sonny" Whittington, age 84, of Grayson will be held 2PM Thursday January 24, 2013 at the Crossroads Baptist Church, Grayson; with Bro. Tommy Nelson, Bro. Jay Morgan, and Bro. Todd Whittington officiating. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in the Crossroads Cemetery under direction of Riser Funeral Home of Columbia. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening January 23, 2013 at the Riser Funeral Home, located at 7131 U S Highway 165 , from 4 pm until 9 pm; and on Thursday, at the church from 9 am until time of service. Harry Richard Whittington was born on February 11, 1928 to the union of his parents, Charlie Ferrand Whittington and Annie Marie (Holladay) Whittington in Caldwell Parish. He passed from this life on Monday, January 21, 2013 at the Glenwood Regional Medical Center in West Monroe following an extended illness. Known by everyone as "Sonny", he was retired with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, and was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Larry Dean Whittington, a brother, Owen C. "Pete" Whittington, sister-in-law, Lurlene Whittington; a sister, Louise Jarrell and brother-in-law Finus Jarrell. Sonny was an avid gardener, and deer hunter, and had a wonderful outlook on life, even during the last battle he fought with his health. He will be sorely missed by his family and everyone who knew him, but will never be forgotten. Surviving Sonny, his wife of sixty-five years, Johnnie Lea (Whitten) Whittington of Grayson; two sons, Richard Whittington of Columbia and Harry Whittington and wife Linda of Grayson; three daughters, Sharon W. Hammond and husband Larry of Shepherd, TX; Brenda Moseley and husband Jerry of Columbia, and Ruby W. Barrett and husband Chuck of Grayson; two sisters, Yvonne May and husband Crafton of West Monroe, and Mary Alice Hutchinson and husband Darcy of Jonesboro, his grand-children, Todd Whittington and wife Dody, Miranda Meredith, Jonathan Dean Moseley and wife Kelly; Janice Whittington; Patrick Barrett and wife Leslie; Christa Anne Moseley; Spencer Barrett and wife Jessica; Kylie Barrett ; Robert Hammond and wife Carmen; Matthew Hammond and wife Miranda, Mark Hammond and friend Ashley; His great-grandchildren include, Ethan Whittington, Eli Faucett, Tyler Faucett, Karlee Elisabeth Moseley, Jackson Barrett, Layton Barrett, Jaycie Meredith, Kaylee Meredith,Savannah Meredith, Jordan Meredith, Kallie Hammond, and Karoline Hammond; and a host of nieces and nephews. Serving as pallbearers will be, Robert Hammond, Matthew Hammond, Mark Hammond, Jonathan Moseley, Spencer Barrett, Dustin Wyant, Derek Pauley, and David Earl Varnell. Honorary pallbearers include Bobby Joe Mercer, Bill Chappell, Randy Evans, Karen Sue Evans, Charles Lee May, and David May. In lieu of flowers, any planned memorials may be made to the Crossroads Cemetery, 7025 Hwy 126 West, Grayson, LA; or to a charity of one's choice.
