CHARLES E. WILDS, JR., M.D.
Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory Topeka, KS

Charles E. Wilds, Jr., M.D., 93, Topeka, KS. passed away Tuesday, August 25, 
2009, at Stormont-Vail Health Center. He was born October 12, 1915, at 
Natchez, MS, the son of Charles Ernest Wilds, Sr., and Veronica Elizabeth 
Tushaus Wilds.

He was educated in the parochial schools and was graduated from St. Matthew's 
High School in Monroe, LA in 1934. He received his Bachelor of Science degree 
from Spring Hill College, Mobile, AL, in 1938, and his M.D. degree from St. 
Louis University Medical School in 1942.

He was married June 30, 1941, to Marie Elizabeth Perabo at St. Louis, MO. She 
survives.

Dr. Wilds served as Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in World War II in 
a clearing company under General George Patton in the European Theatre. He was 
in five major battles, including Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, 
Rhineland and Central Europe.

Following the war, Dr. Wilds practiced as a family physician in Monroe, LA 
until 1964,when he returned to St. Louis University Medical School to 
specialize in psychiatry. In 1967, he moved to Topeka, where he served as a 
psychiatrist at the Kansas Reception and Diagnostic Center (KRDC) for 16 
years. In 1983, he retired as Director of KRDC and moved to Bella Vista, AR. 
In 2000, he moved to Mobile, AL, returning to Topeka in 2006.

Dr. Wilds was a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society, the Kansas 
Medical Society, and Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. In 1983, the 
Community Addictive Treatment Center presented Dr. Wilds with a special 
recognition for his 15 years of service to the organization.

Survivors include five children, Veronica "Ronni" Wilds Clark, Bella Vista, 
AR, Charles "Chuck" Ernest Wilds, III, Wichita, Mary Wilds Lenz, Topeka, 
Richard Perabo Wilds, Lawrence, and Thomas "Tom" King Wilds, Dallas; eight 
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, 
Helen Wilds Edwards, Monroe, LA, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and 
great-nephews.

A Rosary will be recited at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel Friday, Aug. 28, 
2009 at 6:00 p.m., visitation will follow until 8:00 p.m. Mass of Christian 
Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic 
Church, interment following at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Military honors will be 
conducted by Ft. Riley Burial Detail.
