RICHARD WARREN WILLIAMS

Dr. Richard Warren Williams, age 65, died on October 19, 2016 after a 
valiant fight that only a man of his character could endure. He was beloved 
and respected by his family, friends and colleagues for a life defined by 
deep intelligence, passion and integrity.

Memorial services will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, 908 
Rutherford Street in Shreveport, Louisiana, at 10 AM, on Wednesday, October 
26, 2016. The family will be receiving and visiting with friends at 9 AM in 
the Cathedral parlor.

Dick was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 6, 1951, though he lived the 
majority of his life in Shreveport. A psychiatrist well-known both statewide 
and in the broader region, Dr. Williams graduated in the third class of 
Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Shreveport (MD, 1976); 
concluding with a psychiatric residency in 1979. 

To use the word "concluding", however, in regard to Dick Williams' education 
would misrepresent his professional career, both as a general psychiatrist 
and most notably as a forensic psychiatrist. He received professional 
recognition as a pioneer in addiction medicine, including a publication in 
Current Therapeutic Research. Dick's medical career in Shreveport was 
extensive and impactful. He was Medical Director of the Chemical Dependency 
Units at P&S Hospital, Charter Forest Hospital, Brentwood Hospital and North 
Louisiana Regional Hospital. Other positions held include Chief of Staff at 
Charter Forest Hospital, Deputy Coroner for Caddo Parish and Clinical 
Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at LSU School of Medicine. 

Dick believed in medicine as both an art and a science. He possessed an 
intellectual curiosity that enabled him to isolate a problem, analyze it and 
suggest a solution for each individual. This was evident by his care and 
compassion for his patients in private practice. His influence will be felt 
in this city for years to come. 

Quite apart from Dick's career accomplishments, his greatest pride and joy 
was his family. He lived for and cherished their times spent together. 

Dick was predeceased by his father, Warren Shiloh Williams. He is survived 
by his mother Mary Ann Nash Williams and by his devoted wife, Michelle 
Chapman Williams. Also surviving are his loving daughters; Nicole Gross, 
Hilary Elberson and CeCe Hilliard, together with their husbands, Bo Gross, 
Jon Elberson and John Hilliard.

Dick's grandchildren, whom he adored, are Avery, Olivia and Andrew Gross; 
Elizabeth Elberson; and Frances Hilliard.

Dick is also survived by his siblings; Mary Grant (Tommy), Nancy Wilson 
(James) and John Williams (Roxanne), along with his nieces and nephews, all 
of whom he was equally proud.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the Shreveport 
Fire Department and the University Health Intensive Care Burn Unit staff. 
Appreciation is extended to Bobbie and Ozzie Collins for their 25 years of 
loyalty and devotion.

Research Hospital , 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105, St. Mark's 
Episcopal Cathedral, or the charity of your choice
