Ms. Woodward was born on July 10, 1915 in Dubach, LA to Mabe Thomas Hall and Margaret Colvin Hall. She earned her Bachelor's degree from La. Tech and her Master's degree from University of Arkansas. She always supported her Bulldogs and Razorbacks. Ms. Woodward began her teaching career in Dubach and still remembered many of her students from that time. She was a supervisor of the 5th grade lab school at Southeastern Louisiana University. Her long teaching career then took her to Kenner, LA from 1946 to 1960. She and her husband, Mitchell, moved to West Monroe, LA, where she first taught at Ouachita Junior High and finisher her 43 year teaching career at Kiroli Elementary. After retirement, Ms. Woodward traveled the world with her friend, Claire White, a fellow teacher. She was a longtime member of the Eastern Star and a proud member of the professional teacher's sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. All of her life, Ms. Woodward, was a strong Christian who loved her church and church family. She was a member of the First Assembly of God, West Monroe and continued to give and attend the church as long as she was able. Alverne Woodward is preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Mitchell Woodward; her beloved brother, Milton Hall; her sisters-in-law, Gloria Hall, Sissy Pumphrey and Virginia Woodward. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Woodward Uballe; her granddaughter, Angela Beasley; her grandson, Rob Stevens; five great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Maggie Carter and Sandra Parks; her beloved niece, Blanche Wilks; two nephews, Kenneth W. Hall and Mabe Hall; along with many other much loved nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, great grand nieces and nephews and her best friend of 90 plus years, Henri Alice Wise. The family would like to thank her friend, Ms. Ruby Richards, for her companionship and care of Alverne for many years. We also wish to thank Bonnie Brown for providing Alverne with great care and companionship this last year. Finally we would like to thank Christus St. Joseph nursing home and hospice for attentiveness to her needs this past couple of years. Services for Alverne Woodward will be Tuesday, January 14, 2014, 11:00 A.M. at First Assembly of God of West Monroe with visitation starting at 10:00 A.M. until time of service. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park, Monroe, LA. Pallbearers will be Rob Stevens, Kenneth W. Hall, Mabe Hall, Prentice "Skeeter" Wilks, Prentice S. Wilks and Josh Badasch. The family requests that donations be given in Alverne Woodward's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
