Her parents also owned the first radio in the community and on Saturday night friends gathered to listen to the "Grand Ole Opry." She passed from this life on July 12, 2014, at Plantation Manor Nursing Center in Winnsboro, LA. Ms. Zumbro witnessed changes in transportation from the train to the space program and in communication from the telegraph to the cell phone and internet. She lived without indoor plumbing and electricity and experienced world affairs from WWI forward. For a number of years, Ms. Alliegene owned a candy store across the street from Baskin School where students came at recess to buy candy. They could also buy one cigarette at a time to smoke behind the store. Later, with the warning from the surgeon general, she said that she wished that she had never sold them. She loved the grocery business, but even more she loved the customers. Later, she worked at both Woods' Grocery and Killian's Grocery in Baskin. A staunch Baskin High School basketball fan, Ms. Zumbro witnessed the nine state championships won by the girls' team and felt that a sense of community was lost when the school was consolidated. She attended Louisiana Tech where she studied education. Ms. Alliegene was devoted to her family, her church, and her community. As she prayed for her family daily, she called each member's name aloud. She had a true concern for people and a special love for children. Over the years she served her church as pianist, Children's Department Head, and Treasurer and Church Clerk. She always led a God-centered life, and later in life she felt that her ministry was to call and send cards to those in need. When asked her secret to life, she quickly replied, "Love God, love others, and love yourself." Recently a friend said that when thinking of Baskin Baptist Church, Ms. Alliegene Zumbro always came to mind. God truly blessed her with a loving family, good health, and a supportive church and community which she loved dearly and where her legacy will live on. The family would like to thank Plantation manor and Hospice TLC for being so passionate in what they do for providing such comforting care and to Dr. Michael Sampognaro, whom she thought was the best and had a special place in her heart, for his compassion and the wonderful care he provided for her. Visitation will be held Monday, July 14, at Baskin Baptist Church from 5 p. m. to 8 p. m. A celebration of the life of Alliegene Walton Zumbro will be held at Baskin Baptist Church on Tuesday at 10 a. m. Grandson Brian Rogers assisted by Reverend Marion Spence will officiate.
