Ballowe, of Diamond, Plaquemines parish, La., was born in Nelson county, Va. in 1843. He is a son of Thomas L. and Sarah Ballowe. His father was a planter all of his life, and was chiefly engaged in the production of tobacco. He married Miss Sarah A. Anderson, daughter of William and Polly Ann (Couch) Anderson, of Virginia. To them were born eight children, four of whom are yet living, named Mary E., the wife of James T. Roberts, of Virginia; William A., of Virginia; Sarah J., the wife of William H. Smith, of Virginia, and Thomas H., the immediate subject of this notice. Thomas L. Ballowe was the son of Thomas Ballowe, who was a colonel in the Revolutionary war. Dr. Ballowe graduated in medicine in New York, after attending schools at different places. In 1861 he entered the war in Company G, of the Eleventh Virginia regiment. He was wounded several times, and at the last battle of Manassas, he received a wound that disabled him from field duty, and as soon as he was able he was given duty at Charlotte, N. C., in the medical purveying department, where he remained until the close of the war. In 1869 he removed to Louisiana, first settling on the Red river, and in 1870 he came to New Orleans, where he remained for one year. He then removed to his present home in Plaquemines parish, where he has carried on planting quite extensively in connection with his professional practice. In 1874 he was married to Miss Angelique Groleau, and to them have been born three children, two of whom are living, named Hewitt L. and Alice V., a pupil of the Pass Christian institute of Mississippi. The former is a student at the Tulane university, of New Orleans. Dr. Ballowe stands high in his community. From Biographical and Historical Memoires of Louisiana, volume 2, pp. 260-261.
