D., Plaquemine, La., one of the leading physicians of Iberville parish, was born in Louisiana in 1860. His father, James L. Barker, is a native of the parish, born July 24, 1835, a son of James and Delphine (Marionneaux) Barker, both of whom are deceased. He was married December 1, 1857, to Miss Loretta Tomlinson, a daughter of Henry Tomlinson, and nine children were born to them, two of whom survive, Dr. William E. Barker, the subject of this sketch, being one of this family. The mother died in 1867, and in 1876 Mr. Barker was united in marriage to Mrs. Elmire (Fau) Polson, widow of J. W. Polson. Four children were the result of this union, two of whom are deceased. Mr. Barker has been prominently connected with the public affairs of Plaquemine, and served as her mayor for two terms. He has also been interested in the intellectual advancement of the place, and served as a member of the school board for eight years. He has been steamboat agent and wharfmaster since February, 1868, and since 1869 has been engaged in the swamping business. He is the owner of a considerable amount of land, both timber and clear. He and his family are members of the Roman Catholic church. Dr. William E. Barker, son of the above received his literary education in the University of Mississippi, at Oxford, and in 1882 began the study of his profession. He was graduated from the medical department of Tulane university in 1885, and has devoted his time to practice since then. He located at Plaquemine, and his abilities and success have been such that he has won a large and enthusiastic patronage. He is the proprietor of a well-equipped drug store at Plaquemine, which has also been a paying investment. In 1887 the Doctor was married to Miss Sadie Grass, a daughter of Adolph and Elizabeth (Dupuy) Grass. Mrs. Barker died within two months of her marriage. In 1889, February 15, Dr. Barker was married to Miss Olive Gassie, daughter of Auguste and Masoline (Lefebere) Gassie. One child has been born to them, but it died in infancy. Dr. Barker is a member of the Knights of Pythias, and also belongs to the Phi Delta Theta society. He and his wife belong to the Roman Catholic church.
