THE BURAT FAMILY AND BURAS, Plaquemines Pr. LA Lou Landry ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Several people told me about this story, but the first time I heard it from my mother-in-law, Marie Zora Weiss Landry. born in Esterwood, LA Nov.27, 1893. She was a descendent of that Burat family and has baptism records from the St. Louis Cathedral Archives located in New Orleans, LA.about this family. These copies were signed by the Very Rev. Nicholas J. Tanaskovic, O.M.I. as certified Xerox copies which are written in Spanish. Zora transposed these records into English. This story connects to the one below. The City of Buras, LA Plaqumines Parish situated just below New Orleans, LA was named after the Burat Family. A change in spelling came about over the years. Legend has it that Jean Pedro Burat lost his property in the Buras area, gambling. So when Exxon drilled and hit oil in recent years, the company had to keep a percentage of the revenue derived from the land in escrow for the family of Burat descendents. One lawyer told some distant relatives of Zora's, that if they could account for all the descendents of that family, he would try to take control of the millions in funds. So far it is still in escrow. The Burats connect to many of the Louisiana families, one is the Robeau family. Juan Baptiste Burat and Bastien Frediric's daughter, Toornica(sp?) married Jean Baptiste D'Autneuil Dec. 8, 1789. He was a native of Santonge and the son of Juan Dautneuil and Catanina Lonais(?). Louis Robeau, son of Joseph Robeau of Masella, France and Maria Louergue joined the Burat family by marrying Marguerite Burat. They had a daughter Ursula Robeau born in New Orleans, LA Jan 2, 1791. Then Jean Baptiste D'Autreuil's wife Marie Anne Burat and Marguerite Burat were sisters. This question remains in Zora's records: Were Charles Robeau married to Catherine Riche of Donaldsonville, LA and their daughter Constance Robeau who married Pierre Duplessis and secondly, Pierre Hebert related to Louis Robeau and Marguerite Burat?
