D., successful and well-known practicing physician,now health officer of St. Bernard parish, was born in Plaquemines parish,La., March 27, 1881; son of Jules and Valentine (Corne) Meraux, the formerof whom was a native of Salin Jura, France, and the latter of Plaqueminesparish, La. Jules Meraux came to America in the year 1854, and at oncelocated in Plaquemines parish, where he became engaged in mercantilebusiness. He later removed to St. Bernard parish, but there continued inthe same lines of business until his death in 1909. He is at this timesurvived by his wife, who resides at Merauxville, St. Bernard parish, La.To their union the following children were born, these being, in order oftheir birth, as follows: L. A., the subject of this sketch; Phillip, ofthe city of New Orleans; Charles, Julia, Emilie, Antoinette, now thewife of Henry Percy Yates; Claude Jules, now a member of the senior class,academic department of Tulane university, and Anatole, deceased. With theexception of the first and second-named, all are now resident atMerauxville, St. Bernard parish, La. L. A. Meraux attended the publicschools of his birthplace and later entered the Boy's high school (Tulane)at New Orleans, from which in due time he graduated. Upon the completionof his academic education at the latter institution, the young man becameastudent in the medical department of Tulane university, from which he latergraduated with the degree of M. D. After some length of service asvisiting physician at New Orleans charity hospital, he went to London,England, and there put in 1 year of work in the Guy hospital of that city.Upon his return to New Orleans he became resident physician at the HotelDieu hospital, but after 1 year in that capacity, he removed to Arabi, St.Bernard parish, and was appointed health officer of that parish, of whichoffice he has remained incumbent to this time. Dr. Mereaux is a member ofthe Catholic church and is affiliated with the Orleans parish medicalsociety and Acorn Camp, New Orleans, Woodmen of the World. In Feb., 1912,Dr. Meraux became a member of the medical reserve corps, U. S. army, andMay, 1914, was brought into the active list, with rank of first lieutenant,hospital corps, which means that he is in active service now, and subjectto transfer at any time. In Feb., 1908, Dr. Meraux was united in marriagewith Miss Anita Maumus, a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Soul ) Maumus, ofSt. Bernard parish, La. Mrs. Meraux's father is president of the Bank ofSt. Bernard and is largely interested in real estate. No children havebeen born to Dr. and Mrs. Meraux.-end-
