Armstrong In 1720 the engineers report said the Balize measured 250 ft. in length by 120 feet in width. Evelina Lemont, wife of Thomas Ruiz,(the article from L'Heritage spell the name Ruix) b.at the Balize d. 30 Nov. 1860 age 19 and 6 months and 14 days Joseph, son of Captain Joseph and Jemima Preble. William Holliday, b. 3 June,1837, d. 30 March, 1841, at the age of 4 Years, son of Robert and Mary Holliday Mary Holiday, age 25, died four years after her son. Susan Mitchell, wife of John Perrin, age 18, The below inscriptions were sent to me by PAM PHILLIPS SULZER Of Baton Rouge, which came from the "L'HERITAGE" Quarterly of the ST. Bernard Gen. Society which they had extracted from "The Times Picayune, Sunday 9, 1921 issue" Anna Maria, daughter of Joseph and Jemima Preble, died Nov. 2, 1859, age 3 years, 2 months and five days. Margaret McNulty, born 7 August, 1817, died 19 July, 1842 Josephine Barbara Ross, only child of James Boog and Adraina Beaulard Ross, born in the city of Savanah, GA. on the 15th of June 1883(sic) and died at The Balize, La. August 6, 1844 Charlotte Webster, consort of H.B. Webster who died in 1843 at the age of 38, a native of New York Jorden Yorborough, b. 25 Feb, 1826, died 19 July, 1857, age 31 Years, 4 months, and 24 days John Parker, died at the Balize on the eighth of October, 1848, age 37 years, A Native of New York Edward Taylor, son of Asa And Eliza S. Patson, died 5 March, 1848, age 16 Months and 24 days. Julia Glenon, consort of William Ellis, a native of County Westmeath, Ireland, died at the Balize July 18, 1847, age 58 years. I am sure there were many more buried here before the elements took their toll; at one time there were 800 people living at the Balize. This Balize was completely abandoned during the 1860's and most of the people moved to Pilot Town.
