Dabadie Family History, Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana Submitted and prepared by James L. Dabadie ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** The Louisiana branch of the Dabadie family began with the arrival of Jean Clement Lafont Dabadie of Madiran France in Pointe Coupee Parish. He married Celeste Joffrion, who was the daughter of Joseph Jason Joffrion, in 1833 and their son Ovide Lafont Dabadie was born in 1835. Lafont died in 1836 and Celeste later married his brother Casimir Dabadie in 1841. Casimir died in 1841. Ovide served as a Confederate soldier in the Civil War and he died in 1912. Jean Clement Lafont Dabadie is shown in church death records with a last name of Bady and Casimir with a last name of Dabady. The information cited above was obtained from records of the Clerk of Court in Pointe Coupee Parish Louisiana which are listed below. In 1840 Celeste was named as the Widow of Lafont Bady in the Succession of her father Joseph Jason Joffrion who died in 1836. (Old probate court #210). In the 1841 succession of her mother Julie she was also listed as the wife of Lafont Bady. (Old probate court #216). In 1841 Celeste was named as the widow of Jean Clement Bady in her plea to be appointed Tutrix to her minor son Ovide Lafont Bady. (Old probate court #407). This may have been Done in preparation for her marriage to Casimir. On December 8, 1845 the widow Casimir Dabadie filed a petition in the 9th Judicial District Court (No. 344) to be named as Tutrix to her minor son Ovide Dabadie, the issue of her marriage with Lafont (Badie) Dabadie, deceased. The petition further states that Ovide is the only heir of his deceased father Lafont Dabadie and of his uncle Casimir Dabadie deceased. The December 14, 1854 (No. 300) celebration of marriage between Ovide Dabadie and Fanny Major states that Ovide is the legitimate son of Lafo?? (illegible) Dabadie and Dame Celeste Joffrion The above information is not in agreement with the statements of Felix Dabadie in his much read and quoted letter of 1932 to Roland Dabadie. In the 1932 letter Uncle Felix recounts his conversation with his grandfather Ovide who stated that his father was Charles Barnabe' Dabadie a diplomat from France and that his mother was a Miss Joffrion. Uncle Felix also states that Ovide was in possession of the passport of Charles Barnabe' but that he could not locate it because of his failing memory. It seems as though his memory was failing inasmuch as he did not remember the name of his mother Celeste, referring to her as Miss Joffrion. This is remarkable because census records indicate that Ovide and his mother were neighbors for many years. In the 1932 letter Uncle Felix stated that he interviewed his grandfather Ovide several years prior to his death on March 3,1912. Felix was born in 1891 so he must have been a teenager at the time of the interview. The great age difference could account for a misunderstanding. Charles Barnabe' perhaps was Ovide's grandfather or uncle. Ovide did name his first son Charles Barnabe'. Another reason may have been due to bad feelings between Ovide and Celeste. In 1853 Ovide, at age 19, was emancipated from his mother. (9th Judicial court #937). These records must be studied further to determine weather Celeste was hostile to this proceeding. There is still much information to be verified. Marriage records for Celeste & Lafont and Celeste & Casimir have not been found. Celeste did give a date for her marriage to Lafont (March 27, 1833) in her 1841 plea to be named as Tutrix to Ovide, but no date was ever given for her marriage to Casimir. We only know that she was called Widow of Casimir from 1841 until her death in 1861. Ovide and Fanny Major had 5 children, Charles Barnabae'(1855), Francois Simon(1857), Jean Henri(1859), Alphonse(1862) and Ernest (1866) who died in 1867. Fanny died in 1866 and Ovide married Augustine Gauthier in 1869. They had 6 children, Berthelida(1870), Amelia(1872), Gargina(1874), Hazael(1877), Euginia(1879) and Axcia(1883) Augustine died in 1923.
