Julien Poydras, an educated Frenchman, settled first in Pointe Coupee Parish, La., where he entered largely into planting and merchandising, becoming very wealthy, being at one time the owner of 3,700 slaves. He was territorial representative in congress, and being a man of high intellectual power, he was interested in the political affairs of this section and was a warm patron of education. By will he emancipated all his slaves and made large bequests to the city of New Orleans, and to West Baton Rouge gave $30,000 for the support of indigent females. He gave the same amount and for the same purpose to Pointe Coupee Parish and a like sum for the founding of a college or academy. Poydras academy is the offspring of this legacy, and Poydras asylum was also founded by him. Biographical and Historical Memoires of Louisiana, (vol. 2), p. 494.
