Bradford / Nugent Cemetery, Rapides Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane Parker McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Directions: From LA Hwy. 28 East in Pineville, go to Parish Road 1207 and turn right. Continue past Buckeye School to Deville, and go straight past the blinking light for 2.9 miles. At sharp curve, go straight (R. Sasser Rd.) for .4 miles, bear right at Mabou Hill and continue for .3 more miles. Turn left onto dirt road just past a house. There is no sign, but cemetery can be seen from the road and is only .1 miles up the dirt road. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded from the left corner, front to back in rows, as much as possible by Mary Parker Partain on 14 September 1996 and submitted by Jane P. McManus, May 2001. History According to Oliver Mabou who lives in the community and whose family is buried here, Bradford Cemetery was once called Nugent Cemetery because the first burial in 1873 was 12-year old Robert Nugent. He was visiting in the home of his relatives, the Bradfords, when he died. There may have been other Nugent deaths, but this is the only one marked. Several members of this visiting family contracted yellow fever and died in the Bradford home. The Bradford family donated the land for the cemetery, a small, perhaps 30' by 30' square. It was located around the oldest graves, and was later enlarged twice to the present size. Because the Bradfords donated the land, it has since been officially known as Bradford Cemetery. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Row 1: Mabou, Loyd - 13 Aug 1926 / 30 Mar 1996 [Funeral Marker] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Row 2: [front to back] Deville, Earl V. - 14 Jun 1916 / 15 Sep 1993 Deville, Lera Jenkins - 30 Jul 1921 / 22 Feb 1988 [Double Stone] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Reeves, Willis E. - 28 Oct 1923 / 24 Aug 1983 Daddy Reeves, Irene B. - 11 Dec 1930 / 22 Sep 1973 [Double Stone] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Belgard, Joseph Earl - 21 Jun 1919 / 24 Nov 1978, US Army WW2 / Daddy Belgard, Eva J. - 25 Dec 1917 / [no dates] Mama [Double Stone] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Belgard, Adele M. - 1925 / 1994 Mother Belgard, Andrew "Jack" - 25 Jul 1922 / 18 May 1979 Father [Identical Stones] --------------------------------------------------------------------- Belgard, Goldie R. - 13 Feb 1930 / [no dates] Mama Belgard, Aaron C. - 16 Jun 1921 / 27 Nov 1987, US Army WW2 / Daddy [Double Stone] - Married 6 Sep 1945 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Cole, Inez - 5 Oct 1934 / [no dates] Mama Cole, Lionel - 20 Oct 1927 / 17 Apr 1979 Daddy [Double Stone] - Married 8 Jul 1950 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Haymon, J.
