Campground Cemetery at Wilda - Rapides Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane Parker McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Directions: Go west on LA Hwy. 28 past the blinking light at Gardner, and turn right immediately on Brown's Creek Road. Go several miles, turn right on Campground Cemetery Road, and continue to the end of that road. Although this small cemetery is fenced, it is not maintained regularly, and the area has been used as a trash dump for many years. Burials are scattered, but the recording was done in rows as approached. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded by Mary Parker Partain, May 1992. History Around the turn of the century, there was a settlement called Rapides Campground located at this cemetery site on Brown's Creek. It was used by the Methodists for camp meetings. There were two hotels at the site and "hacks" ran from Boyce to the campgrounds carrying worshippers. Mrs. Wilma Dunnam says it was a popular place for young people to "go courting." The land was later bought and used by the Albert Hunter family as a summer camp. The family still owns the land [1991], which has some of the best pine timber in the area. (1) Mr. Ed Stracener, a resident in this area, remembers a Rev. R.H. Harper, District Superintendent of the Alexandria District, driving up in his horse and buggy. He saysthere was a Methodist camp located here from the late 1800's to about the 1920's. [MPP} Rivers, Ruth [Logan], wife of A.M. Rivers - 14 Aug 1891/24 May 1914 Daughter of J.F. & B.E.
