Daffin Cemetery (also known as Atkinson/Orr/Morris Cemetery), Rapides Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane Parker McManus ********************************************** Copyright. Turn left on Bayou Clear Road between the Baptist Church and Cemetery. Go 1.9 miles, and cemetery is on the left just past the Assembly of God Campgrounds. A small sign can be seen from the road if the land is cleared. If not, one must search the area for the sign and cemetery, located about .1 miles from the road. This old abandoned cemetery is at the edge of the trees in the woods, and the tombs have been vandalized in the past. The area is overgrown with large trees and limbs, as if it had not been maintained for 25 years or more. There are many depressions and open holes in the area. Tombstone inscriptions recorded as located in the woods by Jane Parker McManus HISTORY When William Daniel Daffin originally purchased this land from the Atkinsons, there were two cemeteries in the area - the one which is still visible, and a smaller one that was nearby, but completely separate from the larger one. "Miss Aline," daughter of William Daffin, remembers playing in the area where the two cemeteries are located as they were on her father's land. She was not able to remember the name of this second cemetery, and unfortunately there is nothing remaining of the burial ground today... She did, however, remember the names of some of the people who are buried here, even though she could not remember the dates. [History provided by Mrs. Aline Daffin Scarbrock, who was 93 years old in November 1991.] Morris, Sarah A. Orr, wife of William Morris - 28 Aug 1830 / 25 Aug 1913 Morris, William - 9 May 1807 / 15 Jan 1884 [broken stone] Orr, Sophia - 15 Dec 1808 / 8 Mar 1882 [stone lying on ground] Orr, Elizam - 16 Apr 1873 / 22 Aug 1874 Francis, E. E., wife of J. E. Francis - died 15 Sep 1900, aged 33 yrs. Douglas, son of Hiram & Susey Douglas - b&d 8 Jul 1895 [3 large rocks piled together - identified as: Atkinson, Nancy Orr - died about 1910 or 1912, and was probably about 70 or 80 years old when she died. She was Miss Aline's great grandmother. At the time of Nancy's burial, Miss Aline remembers there being many graves here. They had no money for a tombstone, so the family placed some large rocks there, possibly the same ones noted here. Until vandalism a few years ago, there were still many stones standing.] [unmarked burial identified as: Muse, Nanny - [granddaughter of Nancy Orr Atkinson was buried next to Nancy Atkinson.]
