Mt.Pleasant(African-American)Cemetery, Rapides Parish Louisiana Submitted by Jane Parker McManus ********************************************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://usgwarchives.net/la/lafiles.htm ********************************************** Directions: This small African-American cemetery is located near the Echo Community on LA Hwy. 457. From US Hwy. 167 over-pass in downtown Alexandria, take LA Hwy. 1 toward Marksville. Go almost 20 miles and turn left onto LA Hwy. 457. Continue for approximately .5 miles, until you pass Old River Road on the right. Just beyond this corner on the right, there is a chain-link fence that surrounds a small cemetery. Although there were only a few slabs and tombstones visible inside the fenced area, the ground was neatly mowed, and the cemetery is maintained by family members. There are many depressions in this burial ground that indicate lost burials. According to a local resident, the cemetery had to be moved when the present levee system was built. A small church was built in the center of this area, and the graves were moved to the site. Since there were no vaults and only a few markers, most graves have been lost. Later, the church was disbanded, and members began attending the Morning Glory Baptist Church across the river in the Ruby Community. Tombstone inscriptions were recorded as approached by Jane P. McManus and Mary Parker Partain, October 28, 1996.
