JOSEPH CATHOLIC CEMETERY (Cheneyville) - Rapides Parish Directions: St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery is located off Klock Street in Cheneyville, directly behind the church of the same name. It covers a half city block and is well maintained. Inscriptions were recorded from the front gate by Mary Parker Partain, August 1993, and submitted by Jane McManus, July 2000. History: The first Catholics in the Cheneyville area were of Italian and French descent, and they were served by a missionary priest from Marksville. From 1892 to 1912 Cheneyville was designated a Mission of St. Anthony's in Bunkie. In 1912, it became a Mission of St. Francis Xavier in Alexandria, with services held each month in a member's home, as there was still no meetinghouse. A wood frame building with center steeple was erected where the cemetery is now located, and was named St. Francis Xavier. The Church later became a Mission of St. Martin's in Lecompte. Land was acquired in front of the old church and a modern structure was built facing Klock Street. It was renamed St. Joseph's, and in 1966 became a Parish instead of a Mission. Now there is a rectory and church hall, in addition to the impressive brick church. The neat little cemetery is directly behind the Church, occupying a half block area. We do not know who was the first person buried here, but it was more than likely a member of the Italian or French families. The oldest burials are probably in the rear corners of the cemetery, but regrettably they have no identification. One tombstone near the back is inscribed in Spanish. Some of the first families, whose contributions were mostly in the area of business and commerce instead of agriculture, were the Parrinos, Dinos, Roxes, and Politos. Mexican or Spanish families, who worked mainly in agrarian occupations, were the Alejandros, Sausedas, Munguias, Onisheas, and others.
