This essay, "Lewis Thompson, A Carolinian and His Louisiana Plantation,
1848-1888: A Study in Absentee Ownership" was written by J. Carlyle Sitterson,
than a Professor of History of the University of North Carolina, later a
Chancellor there.  The book was ESSAYS IN SOUTHERN HISTORY, published by the
Univeristy of North Carolina Press in 1949.
