The death rate 30 percent and 20 percent deserted, mostly to the TransMississippi Department. Company B, Stafford Guards. Rapides Parish, Leroy A. Stafford, promoted Colonel April 24, 1862; W. T. Cummings, killed May 4, 1863; A. C. Bringhurst, died Nov. 29, 1863; J. D. Workman, killed Sept. 22, 1864. The death rate was 38 percent. Company C, Bienville Blues, Bienville Parish, Benjamin W. Pearce, dropped April 24, 1862; R. Allen Pierson, killed July 18, 1864. The death rate was 38 percent. Company D, Bossier Volunteers, Bossier Parish, John J. Hodges, promoted Major July 3, 1863; Richard J. Hancock. The death rate was 38 percent. Company E, Milliken Bend Guards, Madison Parish, William R. Peck, promoted Lt. Colonel April 24, 1862; George D. Shadburne, resigned October 1, 1862; Edward Owens. The death rate was 42 percent-This was the only company with a large number of foreign-born,55 percent. Company F, DeSoto Blues, DeSoto Parish, Henry L. N. Williams, promoted Major April 24, 1862; William F. T. Bennett, killed July 9, 1864. The death rate was 39 percent. Company G, Colyell Guards, Livingston Parish, John S. Gardner, dropped April 24, 1862; Alfred A. Singletary, promoted Major October 8, 1863; William E. O=Reilly, retired February, 1865. The death rate was 39 percent. Company H, Brush Valley Guards, Bienville Parish, W. F. Gray, dropped April 24, 1862; Grove Cook, mortally wounded May 3, 1863; Cornelius Shively. The death rate was 47 percent. Company I, Washington Rifles, Washington Parish, Hardy Richardson, dropped April 24, 1862; Martin G. Williams. The death rate was 61 percent. Company K, Jackson Greys, Jackson Parish, James R. Kavanaugh, promoted Major October 21, 1861; George W. McCranie. This company became Company M, 12th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, October, 1862. During the course of the war, approximately 1,474 men served in the 9th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Of that number, 233 were killed, 349 died of disease, and 4 died in accidents. This was the highest death rate of all Louisiana units in Virginia. At least 115 men deserted the regiment. Three of the regiment=s four Colonels became Generals during the war. When the Army surrendered at Appomattox, on April 9, 1865, the regiment was the strongest of all the Louisiana units, with 4 Officers and 64 Enlisted Men present.
