July 27, 1939 L. Roy Barmore, 38 of Longleaf, Rapides Parish, was shot and killed last Thursday by Theophilus Messer, 58-year-old Evangeline parish citizen. The shooting was blamed over a disputed tract of timber land to which Messer and the Crowell & Spencer Lumber company, of which Barmore was a representative, laid joint claims. Barmore is well- remembered here. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Barmore, now of El Dorado, Ark., who for a number of years, lived at Old Floyd. Mrs. Annie T. Hedrick, of Oak Grove, is a half brother of the victim. Mr. Barmore was probably one of the most popular men in Rapides parish, in Fact he had a large circle of friends wherever he was known. The fatal shooting occurred one mile from Meridan, La. after Barmore had gone into the woods with two timber cutters for the purpose of cutting timber on the tract said to have been owned by the lumber company, but claimed by Messer.
