"Mel" Sowers Posted on August 17, 2001 WINNFIELD - Graveside services for Col. L.M. "Mel" Sowers will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Garden of Memories, Winnfield, under direction of Southern, Winnfield. Sowers, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, in San Antonio, Texas. He was a native of Winnfield. He graduated from Winnfield High School in 1934 and from Louisiana Tech in 1938. He also graduated from Louisiana State University in 1938. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps Flying Cadet. His first assignment as an Army aviator was to Hickham Field, Hawaii, where he was a bomber pilot in the 11th Bomb group. He was at Hickham Field when the Japanese attached Pearl Harbor. During his career, he received a number of military honors and decorations, including the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Presidential Citation with two oak leaf clusters. He retired from the Air Force in 1968 and returned to Baton Rouge, where he served four years as head of the Louisiana Department of Corrections. Later, he was employed by Volkswagen of American as Regional Parts Manager of the Southern states. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Winnie Vance Sowers; one brother, William Sowers; and one sister, Dorothy Sowers Shelton. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth N.
