G. Canfield. Mrs. August Gertrude Canfield, nee Wyche, died at the residence of her son-in-law Hon. A. J. Murff, in Benton, of heart failure, on September 29, 1897. Mrs. Canfield was born in Warren county, Miss., near Vicksburg, April 3, 1830. She was the widow of Maj. Mercer Canfield, of Alexandria, who was killed on April 8, 1864, while gallantly leading the Crescent Regiment at the Battle of Mansfield. She leaves two children - Mrs. A. J. Murff, of this place, and Mr. H. S. Canfield of Chicago. Her remains were temporarily buried at Coates' graveyard, two miles south of Benton, soon to be removed to Pineville, opposite Alexandria and placed by the side of her deceased husband. Mrs. Canfield was a most estimable woman - a consistent Christian and a model wife and mother, caring constantly for the interest of the household and her loved ones.
