MATTHEWS.-At the family residence, Chaseland plantation, on Bayou Boeuf, this parish, on Friday, Dec. 17th 1897, Mr. Joel E. Matthews, aged 55 years. Mr. Matthews had been in ill health for some time and his death was not unexpected. He was a prominent sugar planter, an esteemed and respected citizen and his death is greatly regretted by all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. He leaves a wife, three daughters and two sons, to whom the DEMOCRAT tenders heartfelt condolence in their sad bereavement. His remains were interred on Saturday in the family cemetery on Bayou Boeuf. Additional Comments: According to a variety of sources, including the Mathews- Ventress-Lawrason papers inventoried under special collections at LSU libraries, the family name of Mathews is spelled with only one "t."
