He served as a private in Co. B, "Ouachita Blues" 4th la. Battn. The article concerning his tragic death appeared in the Ouachita telegraph on 31 mar.. 1869 as follows: Robbery and Murder- Again we are called upon to chronicle another foul deed. On Monday night week, was perpetrated the murder of James S. Grayson, near the residence of Capt. (J.P,) Crosley on the west side of the Ouachita River, by some party of parties unknown. Mr. Gryson, the unfortunate victim, was found about 8 o'clock lying upon the public highway, struck senseles by a brick-bat, and conveyed to the residence of his father- in-law, where he died on Tuesday night about 9 o'clock, having remained after the committal of the assault till his death, utterly unconscious. He was robbed of his pistol and money by the perpetrators of the deed, whose motive was plunder. No one saw the deed. The evidence criminating the perpetrators, is so far entirely circumstantial. Two arrests of soldiers in the camp were made, and examination had before Robert Ray, Parish Judge, last week, the result of which was the comitment for trial of John Phelps, one of the parties charged with the murder, while the other, a young man named Bishop, was discharged. In the meantime Eugene Reary was arrested upon the affadavit of Major Webb, and is now in jail awaitig his examination. Circumstantial evidence strongly points to these as the guilty parties. We hope that the perpetrators of his outrageous murder(s) will be ferreted out and brought to condign punishment. James S. Grayson, the victim, was respectably connected with some of the most influential families here, and was altogether a most upright and inoffensive citizen. His death is lamented deeply by all who were acquainted with him. While we would make no comments which would cast unmerrited stigma upon those not justly implicated, we sincerely hope that the authors of the foul deed may be brought to answer with their lives for the crime. It is but an act of justice to Major Webb, the commander of the post, to say that he has furnished every facility in his power to asxertain the authors of the crime, that justice might be meted out to the guilty parties. --------------------------------------------------------------------- GREEN, FRANK Town Talk Weekly, 14 Jun 1884. Another link that binds the past with the present has disappeared. Lou is gone: my good, kind, faithful Lou. Dear friend of my earliest recollections and happiest associations. When but a child I loved to look up into his good, old face and feel the strokes of his honest hand upon my brow. How kindly did his words fall upon my listening ear; they told me of earlier years, and pictured my childhoods home, when Father and Mother, sisters and brothers were gathered around our happy hearth. He tried not of the dear old picture, nor did it ever grow dim in his memory's eye. His devotion in the past, his faithfullness in the present, his love for me and mine was the strong tie that bound him in our affections. He loved my little ones too, and looked upon them with ancestrial pride and pleasure - ever ready to respond to their call, his deft fingers always willing ot do their bidding. But yesterday we mingled our tears over the remains of our old "Mamy" - his wife for forty years. With grief and affection he consigned her to her last resting place over the river, and to-day with tearful eyes and aching heart we laid ou Lou by her side. Good-bye, old friend--the last relic of my Fathers faithful household is gone, that gathered arould me those earliest recollections. Sleep the sleep of the just, for the regererating waters of Baptism are still damp upon your brow, and the justice of God will reward your good work, and his mercy assign you a place amongst the just. Helm, and Nellie Pearce, aged seven months and twenty days. Again after a lapse of many years the chain is broken - the angel of death has entered our midst and taken from us our darling Jennie. Her beautiful spirit now chants the eternal song. Bereaved ones,l weep not as those who have no hope. Her angel form we shall see again. made more beautiful than anything of earth. Wednesday May 28th, 1884, Cora Luckett, wife of James Hickman, aged 33 years, 5 months. Swiftly and surely came the dread messenger, and in a few short hours the devoted wife and loving mother was forced to answer the summons. How sad is death - at all times, but oh! how unexpressibly sad when it falls upon one who is the guiding star of a little home. How great seems the sacrifice she is called upon to make, when she gazes for the last time on her loved ones and knows they cannot cross the dark river with her; but "God's will be done." and it is not for us who mourn her with aching hearts to murmur, but meekly bow our heads to His almighty will. The subject of this sad notice was a truly lovely character, gentle amiable, and ready to help those she could, and earnestly endeavored to do her duty to God and to man. To her grief-stricken husband, mother and children, to her loving brothers and sisters, her death leaves a void that can never be filled, and to her friends a memory that can never be effaced Sleep on, dear Cora, in thy silent grave, near thy little babe. Never again in this world will the voice of thy loved husband greet thee, or the childish prattle of thy little ones delight thee; but on the shores of that "Golden City" we trust there thou wilt await them. So farewell, dear friend of my girlhood - one long lasting farewell. --------------------------------------------------------------------- HOFFMAN, MOLLY LOUISA Town Talk Weekly, 7 Jun 1884. She was buried in the Catholic Cemetery, Pineville. Alexandria Weekly Town Talk; 2 Aug 1884. July 10th, 1884, Sarah Jane Glenn, beloved wife of C.A. Hooper, aged about 48 years. She died in this happy belief: "Though I walk in the dark valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil." She has gone to that eternal place of rest! We know she is better off! All the many cares and trials of life are over, and how we miss her none can tell. But we all must submit to the will of Him who doesth all things well. A truer, nobler, fonder wife and mother ne'er lived; she was a friend to all in distress. How much she has done for ohters, her husband and children, God only knows. How she has worked and deprived herself - how she has gone in storm and rain, in heat and in cold, for the sake of those she loved best, none will ever know. Ah! mother, good and kind! true loving mother, fare thee well! On that last awful day, may we meet to part no more. Truly we now exclaim, "What is home without a mother." "Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee." J.C.H. --------------------------------------------------------------------- HYMAN, MARGARET Alexandria Weekly Town Talk, 6 Sep 1884.
